Read the first chapter of Job slowly and you learn that in one day this righteous man lost his crops, his livestock, and his children!  Can you imagine how devastating that news must have been?  For many in Southeast Texas and Louisiana they don’t have to use their imagination.  They have experienced it!

What I can imagine is that the week before Hurricane Harvey ravaged this huge area of real estate many in that area were concerned with the same things we tend to be concerned with—things that, in the scope of massive damage and loss of life, are really very trivial!  It is sad that it often takes something tragic to force us to reprioritize our lives.  But that is exactly what we observed time and again after the storm, a reprioritizing of what really matters.

Job’s response to his tragedy was a choice.  He chose to worship God.  This is exactly what many throughout these flooded areas have chosen to do as well!

We saw interviews from evacuees stating their thankfulness for God’s protection, thankfulness for those who rescued them, thankful that they are still alive.

We saw people helping people.  Their political affiliation, their economic status, their level of education, their faith or denomination, even their lifestyle didn’t hinder the fact that they were people in need of help.  Even now help is continuing to pour in to move, house, feed, nurse, and heal those in need.  At some point our help will turn from rescue to recovery, and then from recovery to rebuilding.  It will be a long, strenuous, messy, and expensive process.

What can we do?  As always CASH DONATIONS are needed.  We have chosen to direct people who call to give through the El Paso Baptist Association.  By going to their website, www.elpasoba.org, you can click on their donate button.  On that page you can specify from a list of four agencies which one you would like to donate to.  Please give as the Lord leads you.

As always we must PRAY!  Last Wednesday night a small group of us spent about an hour praying by name for those whom we know personally affected by Hurricane Harvey.  We prayed for rescue workers, for those who were rescued, and for the families who have lost loved ones.  AND, we prayed for this nation.  We prayed for God’s healing from the natural, political, moral, and military storms that continue to ravage the fabric of this nation.

Some of us, when the time is right and if the Lord is willing, will GO to see where and how we can lend a helping hand.  You may want to consider how you can be involved there as well.

My hope is that we will ALL reprioritize and adjust ours lives toward the things that really matter.  Here are a few verses that might give us some guidance:

  • Matthew 6:33 – But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

  • Micah 6:8 – He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?

  • 1 Peter 4:8 – Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins.

I am thankful to walk this journey with you!
